Before a product even touches EU soil, it must comply with a wide range of certificates and markings.

Here is a list of of the most common certificates required:

CE marking

The marking that many products must bear in order to be sold in the European Union and its member states, like Germany. It certifies that the product meets applicable EU requirements.

TÜV

A seal that is particularly relevant for technical and electronic devices. It proves that the product or machine has been tested and is safe.

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)

A standard that ensures that electrical and electronic equipment does not exceed certain limits for hazardous substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium.

GS (Tested Safety “Geprüfte Sicherheit”)

A voluntary certificate that confirms the safety of a product. Products with this mark have passed an additional safety test.

RED (Radio Equipment Directive)

This applies to products that use radio waves. RED ensures that such devices function safely and without interference within the EU.

EU Cosmetics Regulation

This regulation sets out detailed safety requirements for cosmetic products, including the ingredients that may be used in the products and in what concentration.
